Summary

Definition

  • Critical thinking is the ability to identify an issue, dilemma, or problem; frame it as a specific question; explore and evaluate information relevant to the question; and integrate the information into development of a resolution.
  • An advanced manifestation of critical thinking is evidence-based practice – the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence about practice, the creation of policy, and the conduct of research.

Objectives

Participants will:

  1. Describe the hierarchy of critical thinking (knowledge, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation)
  2. Explain basic statistical and epidemiologic concepts, research methodologies and meta-analysis
  3. Describe and search for evidence based guidelines
  4. Use data to assist in understanding the needs of a population
  5. Formulate a practice, research or policy question
  6. Translate research findings into practice for different populations
