Definition
- Ethical behavior and professionalism include conduct congruent with generally accepted moral principles and values and with professional guidelines based on those principles and values.
- This definition includes general leadership ethics, such as honesty and responsibility, as well as ethics specific to the MCH population, such as reducing health disparities and behaving in a culturally competent manner.
Objectives
Participants will:
- Identify basic ethical concepts
- Identify the ethical and legal principles of public health and clinical practice
- Summarize his/her profession’s ethical standards/ guidelines
- Describe the IRB, its importance and function
- Identify and address ethical issues in patient care
- Describe ethical issues in health disparities and address these in clinical care and program development
- Behave in an ethical manner
- Consider the values of cultures we serve and incorporate those into clinical care and program planning

Participation in Faculty Activities
- Attend ethics meeting with faculty or participate in discussion with ethical considerations in meeting
- Attend a family meeting and discuss the ethical issues that arise.
- Discuss how professionalism is manifest in either type of meeting.

- Observe clinical behavior. How is this behavior ethical, or not?
- How do faculty and providers demonstrate or integrate MCH values into their work?
- How do you feel as you consider the ethical dilemmas and challenges that arise in the care of children with pediatric pulmonary conditions?
